Immortal Dominion – Primortal

By Dusty Ray

Fort Collins’ heavy metal badasses Immortal Dominion are back with a new and diverse release, Primortal.

With producer Sterling Winfield (Pantera, Damageplan) backing them up, Primortal is a gem of good music production and a showcase of Immortal Dominion’s metal abilities. From deeply melodic phrases to machine-gun double-kick heaviness, straight rock vocals to the anger driven growls, the musical ideas of Primortal are vast and well executed.

Even though “Deity Definer” opens up the album strongly, it is a lighter note compared to the viciousness contained in the later songs; it sticks to a classic heavy metal feel with discernable lyrics and a modest shredding.

“Reanimated” stands out as one of the heaviest tracks; with demonic screams over lightning fast instrumentals and a face-melting guitar solo, this track is sure to wake the dead.

“U” has more of an alternative rock feel; it’s a somber tune that is comparable to Alice in Chains or Soundgarden.

Finishing off the album is “Thrice,” a chugging monster that creates a refreshing and brutal happy ending to the album.

Overall, Primortal is balanced in a unique way. The more straightforward metal of the first half soon turns into a new creature altogether.

Immortal Dominion’s ability to write more accessible metal is revealed on Primortal, but they stay true to their experimental roots. With a rich buffet of styles throughout the album, Immortal Dominion is sure to round up hordes of new fans.
