With the abundance of bluegrass, country and folk coming out of the Front Range, it takes quite a bit to stick out. To have remained on the scene and to be considered veterans of the style throughout Northern Colorado, however, is a step above the rest. Although chief songwriter Mike Fingers hails from Iowa, the locality of the group is a prominent staple of their work with a solid home base in Fort Collins, not to mention the location of F&Y’s latest album recording at Swingfinger’s Recording Studio (in Fort Collins), owned by the band’s pedal steel guitarist and banjo player Aaron Youngberg. The album itself is a work of a pure Midwest sound, incorporating classic country, folk, swing and touches of honky tonk. Although the album is relatively short at only six songs, F&Y take advantage of every second with veteran storytelling and impressive bouts on fiddle, mandolin and banjo. Within the coming weeks, the band has a number of shows in Northern and Southern Colorado that might be worth a stop-by.
