With an assortment of reeds at his side, local musician and music instructor Andrew Vogt utilizes a number of instruments and a range of talented Front Range musicians to push contemporary jazz standards. Bass, drums and guitar make up the smooth, revolving circle around which Vogt’s impressive saxophone (alto, tenor, and baritone) and clarinet-playing is centered. A wide variety of influence is easy to discern throughout the album, as Vogt covers both the Electric Light Orchestra and a Duke Ellington standard, as well as implementing a multitude of jazz styles. Vogt’s high level of musicianship is demonstrated in his ability to compliment and shape the sounds of original arrangements for a duo, quartet and sextet. “Pour Deux” exemplifies a talent of creating and mastering abstract, complex arrangements with a clarinet-driven call and response between Vogt and Rich Chiaraluce. Look for Andrew Vogt and the Subterranean Jazz Quartet at their next stop in Fort Collins.
