There is nothing sexier than a man of jazz and Dave Wiatrolik fits the part. In his latest release on Dazzle Records, Wiatrolik and his fellow enthusiasts, The Gin Mill Gypsies, display an uncanny knowledge of musicianship and jazz understanding that is impressive to say the least. The slight incorporation of bluegrass and brass in a number of songs (see “Sunshine”, “Honey Do List” and “Three Shots of Whiskey”) only adds to such an impression. The majority of the album invokes a welcomed feel-good atmosphere, inducing a great amount of both foot-tapping and perceived sophistication in the mind of the listener. “Interstate,” however, differentiates itself from the rest of the album. The mysterious, nearly hallucinogenic ambience is provided by echoing vocals, ominous lyrics and Jon Gray’s seemingly improvisational, Miles-style trumpet lulls. The album as a whole is quite an absorbing piece, something well worth the listen. Be on the lookout for Dave and The Gin Mill Gypsies in the coming weeks for performances throughout the Front Range.
