The Burroughs – The Burroughs

4.5 Stars out of 5

Though the band’s namesake is derivative of only three of the nine-piece funk/soul outfit (brothers John, Joshua and Caleb Burroughs), the concept of unity does not appear lost on the remaining members. The Burroughs’ self-titled EP showcases a sound that builds off of itself, utilizing layers of vocals, heavy basslines, rhythm guitar and a proliferating brass section to create something of a whirlwind of absolute power. The influence of Otis rings true throughout the four-song EP, as vocalist John Burroughs continuously crescendos from a soulful swoon to a foot-stomping howl, encouraged by a barrage of horns and Mary Claxton’s heart-thumping percussion. A live show from the Greeley-based group is not one to miss, so check them out for a number of shows this month throughout the Front Range.
