“The importance of music in society is it’s one the most effective ways to express art on a bigger level. Music is so marketable and easy to get your hands on now and I think it’s cool that such a personal form of self-expression can reach the general mass so easily. The impact that expression can have can be positive in so many ways–that self-expression can be so readily available–sort of defines the modern world. If you look at an era like the ‘60s, the music and the artist making it was such a big part of some the radical social change that happened, so in a way, music and society are kind of commentary on each other.”

“Music is a language on its own and we use language to express ideas and thoughts with each other. So I think music is expressing these feelings fully, which you can’t really fulfill in language with the spoken word. Ultimately, all art wants to participate in the shared human experience and that’s what music does for our society, it helps one another share that experience on a soul level in a way that we can’t with language.”

“I think music creates community. I think that a healthy society is built around a healthy community and music plays one of the most pivotal roles in that. If you go back to early civilization, you get a much better sense of community and that was typically due to a much higher role of music in their lives; there were drum circles and people just playing music together in a much more communal way. So as our society grows, music still has its role bringing people together in a way that is more highly evolved then where it was in early civilization, but it’s still fundamental for people bonding and coming together for a variety of reasons.”

“I think that without music we don’t have society. Music is one of key things that makes a civilization exist, other than science and art. Music is totally key in separating humans from fellow beasts that roam the planet with us. Some of the most beautiful art that has ever been created is of the sonic kind and without music, I don’t think we could communicate with each other as effectively. I think other than mathematics, music is the only true universal language. With classical music, there is a lot of complexity and beauty, but when you’re talking about modern music where you have lyrics, it can effect change in our social system. Society wouldn’t exist the way that we do without music.”
