MARTI AND THE DADS

Four men in a band and their long lost greyhound. It sounds like the
premise of a strange Indie film, but this is the best way to describe Fort
Collins newest band, Marti and the Dads. Marti and the Dads is Nic
Turiciano (guitar), Jake Robinson (guitar), Tommy Austin (bass) and Matt
Bombard (drums.)
This fairly new band started in October of 2014.
“We all knew each other for a while and we decided to get together and play
some music,” Nic said.
Jake and Matt are cousins and Nic and Tommy grew up together in
Albuquerque. Nic, Matt and Jake were getting together and playing, and when
Tommy moved to Fort Collins they finally had a bassist and started playing as a
serious band.
Their name comes from a dog that Jake used to have that was given to him
to take care of by a friend.
“It was a community dog, we all took care of her and we always joked that
we were her dads, Marti and her dads,” Jake said.
Their sound can best be described as “surf rock and garage rock had a baby
named Marti and they were both dads when they had the baby,” Matt joked.
“[We are most influenced by] a lot of simple bands that play simple stuff but
have a good energy.”
This is a different kind of band because Nic and Jake are trying out new
instruments. Nic used to play drums and sing in the Cotton Keys, and now he is
trying out the guitar for Marti and the Dads.
“I think it’s cool when musicians play a new instrument because it is a new
outlook on how to play that instrument, but they still get the vibe of how to
play with the band,” Matt said.
Their song-writing process is mostly collaborative, but it does have the
added element of Nic and Jake getting to know their instruments.
“Songs are, to some degree, tracking with what Jake and I are able to
learn on a guitar,” Nic said. “Were so fresh to these instruments that we keep
learning stuff as we go and that keeps getting brought into the songs.”
Nic, Jake and Tommy all live together in a small house. “Music is happening
here every single day,” Jake said.
They are currently recording songs and planning on doing a split EP with
Denver band Panther Martin, and are set to release a song on the Group Hug
compilation.
