On A Mission to Civilize Part 1, I Am the Owl show a great deal of respect for the metal and punk of the ’80s. Now, before you imagine every high-haired stereotype, know that this is not a nostalgia band, and this is not glam rock. This is punk meets metal from the era when rock gods wielded axes. Squealing guitar solos, harmonizing melodic riffs, high-hat rhythm rides – it’s a sound easily recognized, if more rarely heard today. But again, this is not a throwback album, the band adds enough angular changes to reference post-punk, and Josh Rivera’s vocals are more Black Flag than Iron Maiden. This is high volume music that inspires mosh pits. Lyrically, there seems to be some sort of dystopian commentary or storyline going on, but the music is such a rush you may be too amped to notice.
