Classic American Christmas movies with dad. That’s what to expect to feel at the King Cardinal Christmas Holiday Spectacular show at The Downtown Artery on Dec. 8. Frontman Brennan Mackey’s enthusiasm for the season motivates the band’s holidays. His holiday joy is contagious, and he invites everyone to join in the celebration. Brennan’s bandmates describe him as a “full-time quintessential American road-tripping Dad.” The release of Christmas List follows the tradition of the band to release a new holiday song every year.
Brennan says, “this is our fourth year releasing a Christmas song, alongside with an annual Christmas show to release the Christmas song with Christmas themes,” he adds, “We encourage people to dress in their in their ugliest Christmas sweater to our holiday extravaganza.”
Band members Brennan Mackey, Scott Roush, Ben Waligoske, Andrew Porter, and Texanna Dennie, plan this extravaganza as an adult Christmas party with all the trimmings of childhood wonder. There may be a Santa Claus to pledge your holiday dreams to and judge the ugly sweater contest, which includes prizes. Expect Christmas classics and King Cardinal originals. The band decorates the stage with fake snow and ornaments, hoping to rekindle the magic of the holidays.
They hail from Denver, and the first iteration of the band all came from Craigslist. But those friends introduced them all together, and somehow it stuck. The band, King Cardinal in its current state, forms a band with a unique sound that blends Americana, pop, and rock into one blazing sound. The harmonies of Brennan and Tex tantalize the spirit.
Cardinal has been touring the country this year and had a songwriting retreat to collaborate on new songs and sounds. When on tour, it is hard to get a break and concentrate on new material because so much detail goes into the shows and travel. Texanna Dennie, who leads the band with her soulful voice and commanding stage presence, talks about what comes after Christmas. “We have a few new songs we are proud of. We wrote them recently at a stop on the tour, and they are our first collaborative creations,” she said. “Moving forward, I am personally very excited about putting out what we are dreaming up together and what we are allowing space for as a band.”
This year they released the Same Drugs with the Colorado Sound, a cover from Chance the Rapper that saw tremendous success. They plan to keep growing and mixing their unique sounds for an upcoming release.
