In Tune With The Seasons: Late Summer

So here we are, Arise and NewWestFest are in rearview and Late Summer is upon us with the harvest booming and a slight chill in the evening air. This transformative time has been honored for centuries in the far East as one of the 5 major seasons and as the time of year we connect to the Earth’s energy.

We’re all familiar with Mother Earth, her roaring rivers, breathtaking mountains, and stunning sunsets feed our souls. Gifting us food and water for sustenance, this nourishing energy helps us thrive while teaching us lessons and making us smile. The ancient Chinese felt this powerful connection and integrated Earth as one of the 5 elements in their traditional medicine. Finding interconnectedness between all things, they identified this element within the human body.

When we are nourished in mind, body, and spirit we become balanced beings, mentally sharp, satisfied by food, and spiritually connected.  If the body’s Earth energy is imbalanced we see symptoms like IBS, constipation, gas/bloating, fuzzy headedness, weight gain, worry, pensiveness, and fatigue. The Earth organs (Stomach & Spleen) help us digest food and also aid digestion of information. With poor digestion we oftentimes can’t digest ideas or concepts; our minds churn as do our bellies.

 

So how do we keep our Earth energy balanced?

Eat & Be Merry!
Take advantage of Late Summer by enjoying the bountiful harvest! Eat local fruits and veggies. Gather together with family & friends filling your time with laughter & joy. This will feed your soul and keep worry at bay.  


Get Outdoors!
Avoid electronic distractions! Instead spend time with your feet on the Earth taking in the spectacular views, smelling the flowers, and enjoying the last warm days of summer.  

 

Support Digestion!
Consider a probiotic purchased from a health food store. Drink a glass of warm water every morning. Avoid sugar, decrease dairy, and sip on mint or ginger tea.

 

Essential Oils!
Pick 2-3 of your favorites listed below, add 5 drops of each into a 1oz bottle of carrier oil (avocado oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, etc). Use on pulse points, add to a bath, or breathe in the aroma to boost your Earth energy. Choose from Patchouli, Myrrh, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Rosemary, Ginger, Frankincense. Add citrus (Neroli, lemon, bergamot) for an uplifting blend.

 

Acupressure!
To aid digestion self-massage the tops of your forearms and outsides of your shins along the muscles. Massage tender spots a little extra. Also press 2 inches to the right, left, above, and below the navel forming a diamond shape. For an added boost use your essential oil blend on these areas too!

 

Nurture Yourself!
Self-care isn’t selfish, you can’t take care of others unless you take care of yourself. Without self-time we become resentful, spread too thin, stagnated, and depressed.  Now is the time to self-cultivate, self-nourish, self-inspire and manifest your ideas!
